The number of self-employed in Moscow has exceeded two million
The number of professional income tax payers in Moscow has exceeded two million people. This is more than 15% of the total number of self-employed registered in Russia. This was announced by Maria Bagreeva, Deputy Mayor of Moscow, head of the Moscow Department of Economic Policy and Development of the city.
"The growing number of self-employed people indicates the dynamic development of the city's economy and the growing entrepreneurial activity of the population. More and more Muscovites, starting their own businesses, choose self—employment and offer services in a variety of fields — from tutoring to design and IT development. As of May 1, 2025, the number of professional income tax payers in Moscow has exceeded two million people. Their total income for the entire duration of this tax regime in Moscow (from January 1, 2019) amounted to more than 1.7 trln rubles," the deputy mayor emphasized.
The professional income tax is in demand by citizens who work for themselves and do not hire employees. Its advantages are the simplicity of registration, the automated mode of transmitting information about income received, the absence of the obligation to provide tax reports and use cash registers.
The most popular types of activities for the self-employed, who indicated them at registration, are passenger and goods transportation, delivery, rental of apartments, advertising and marketing, as well as construction.
In January — April 2025, the capital's professional income tax payers issued more than 108 mln checks to customers — almost four times more than in January — April 2024, which indicates an increase in the business activity of the self-employed in Moscow. The average size of the check at the end of April this year was 2937 rubles.
In January — April 2025, the self—employed transferred 6.5 bn rubles to the Moscow budget, which is 53% more than in the same months last year. Over the entire period of the tax regime, the capital's budget has received more than 45 bn rubles of tax.
