For the third time, Moscow is the leader in the ranking of Russian regions in terms of Sustainable Development Goal indicators

For the third time in a row, Moscow took first place in the ranking of Russian regions by indicators of the UN Sustainable Development Goals prepared by the Center for Sustainable Development and ESG-Transformation of MGIMO.

In accordance with the UN methodology, the ranking analyzes 130 indicators of Rosstat's official statistics that demonstrate progress in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by regions, including “Good Health and Well-being”, “Quality Education”, “Gender Equality”, “Decent Work and Economic Growth”, “Industrialization, Innovation and Infrastructure”, “Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements”, “Combating Climate Change” and others. The assessment indicators are grouped into four clusters: social, economic, environmental and institutional.

“Moscow in terms of sustainable development confidently competes with the largest cities of Russia and the world, which is confirmed by an objective comparison of statistical indicators. Sustainable development goals in 2024 correspond to 96 percent of the capital's program budget, and in the 2025 budget this share will be 97 percent. Each state program of Moscow corresponds to one or more goals. In particular, 44 percent of the 2024 program budget corresponds to SDG 11 “Cities and Human Settlements.” This clearly demonstrates that the issues related to improving the quality of life of citizens and creating a comfortable urban environment are central to the city policy,” said Maria Bagreeva, Deputy Mayor of Moscow, Head of the Moscow Department of Economic Policy and Development.

The authors of the MGIMO ranking note the improvement of Moscow's performance in achieving SDG 7 “Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all” and SDG 8 “Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all”.

The city's performance in achieving the indicators included in SDG 5 “Ensure gender equality and empower all women and girls”, SDG 6 “Ensure availability and sustainable use of water and sanitation for all” and SDG 11 “Ensure open, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and human settlements” remains high. According to seven SDGs, the city is among the top ten leaders among the regions of the Russian Federation.

“Moscow is confidently moving towards sustainable development. The city's successes in this area are receiving Russian and international recognition. In 20 Russian sustainable development ratings released in 2023-2024, Moscow ranks first. We are ready to share successful experience and best practices in the field of sustainable development and invite representatives of Russian regions to cooperate”, - emphasized the Deputy Mayor.
