Moscow industrial enterprises increased energy consumption by 3.8% in 2023
Moscow's industrial sector has increased its energy consumption to more than 5.1 billion kilowatt-hours in 2023. This is 3.8 percent more than in 2022, said Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Economic Policy and Property and Land Relations Vladimir Efimov.
"According to the results of 2023, the leader in energy consumption among the sectors of the capital's economy was the industrial sector, which showed an increase of 3.8 percent. Such dynamics is explained by the active development of production, opening of new enterprises and intensive development of new areas, including through import substitution. The greatest contribution to growth was made by the production of electrical equipment, metallurgy, production of automobile and railway transport, pharmaceuticals, as well as clothing and food products," said Vladimir Efimov.
The second place is occupied by urban electric transport, its energy consumption in 2023 increased by 3.7 percent and reached 2.9 billion kilowatt-hours. The increase is due to the development of transportation infrastructure, commissioning of 14 new metro stations and two railway diameters.
According to the city's Department of Economic Policy and Development, energy consumption of Moscow's commercial sector has been growing for three years after a decline in 2020 due to the pandemic. It increased by 2.5 percent in 2021 and 1.9 percent in 2022. In 2023, the capital's businesses ramped up energy consumption to 32.6 billion kilowatt-hours, 2.2 percent higher than 2022 volumes.
Energy consumption is an important proxy indicator of business activity: the more goods and services companies produce, the more electricity is consumed in the commercial sector. The growth of this indicator is a confirmation that the capital's businesses are sustainable, actively developing and increasing production and sales.
According to the capital's Department of Investment and Industrial Policy, by the end of 2023, the number of industrial enterprises in the city has increased to 4.2 thousand. The number of enterprises engaged in electronics production and instrumentation has increased by eight percent, now they are about 760, and also by 14 percent - the number of food producers, now they are over 290. Also among the newly opened production facilities are companies in the medical, pharmaceutical, machine-building and other industries.
